Lost user's profile

Hello,
Win 2K professional, 233 MHz platform. On startup with self as user,
system complains of lost or corrupt profile, stated it was using a
non-permanent profile instead. Result - lost email, bookmarked web pages
etc.

Later, system experiences a ntsokrnl.exe corruption, forcing a restart
using Last Known Good Configuration ==> apparently it used the
"Temporaray" profile which has now become permanent.

Does anyone know what is the name and PATH of the file storing the
profile. Is there a *.bak file or other that could be used, any other
suggestion welcomed

I'd say that you had more problems than just a corrupt
profile. I would make a backup of everything ASAP then
investigate the cause. It sounds more like a hardware
problem than a virus or worm, but you should still check
your system out with a virus checker and spy-ware checkers.

The path is generally C:\Documents and Settings\UserName but . . .

This most certainly is a deteriorating hard disk. I conclude from your
system specification it is an older computer, otherwise you could check
through a S.M.A.R.T. function whether my assumption is true.

You will have to install a new disk and either install all software again
or clone the old drive when you can accept the status as it is.
In the first instance you can let the old disk be a slave and copy all
files you wish to keep to the new drive (for as long as the old drive will
function).
