lost start menu

When I start up Win XP Prof the initial screen does not
have the start menu. For that matter there is nothing I
can click on and no where for me to go. When I try
loading in safe mode I still get the same screen as noted
above. This install was working just fine. What do I
need to do to correct this problem

In my experience, this has been an issue with a corrupt
explorer.exe file. However, I only encountered this on
Windows 2000 systems.

Two things to try:

1. If you can Ctrl+Alt+Del to get the Task Manager, and
then click File New Task, use that to import a copy of a
good system's explorer.exe and overwrite the corrupt one.

2. Also try updating to the newest service pack of XP.
