lost router password--query

MZB

OK I have a Dell Dim 2400 in the basement. It has a broadband connection
with a linksys router.

Upstairs I use a Dell Inspiron 2200.

All works great. I even have some folders networked and various security
settings are in place. This was done about 3 years ago and I no longer
remember how to do settings and I also lost the password to change any
settings. If I get desperate I can always press the reset button but then I
would have to call Linksys to help me through the appropriate settings.

Now my question:

I will be getting a new laptop at work that I can take home. But, is there
any way I can access the internet with this laptop at home?? I do have a
wired connection to the router also, but I assume this will not effect
connectivity. I assume it will stay say secured network and I will be unable
to get on.

Any suggestions?

You can make a wired connection between the laptop and the router and
access the Internet. Wired connections don't have security settings.

If you've defined a WEP or WPA key on the router, it only affects
wireless connections.

1. If you don't remember the warless settings and don't remember the password, you may not be able to use wireless.
2. If you don't setup Mac filter, wired should works in most cases.
3. You can reset the router without calling Linksys. It will reset to the factory settings.

Robert:

I'm not sure if I set up Mac filtering or not.

I know I can reset the router. I'm worried about how to set it up after that!!!

(I just don't remember all the settings and I would like it to be somewhat secure)

Then you can try the wired first. In most cases, people don't setup Mac filter. So it may work.

If you remember which computer you last used to access the
router's web interface then you may be able to use this program
to retrieve
the router's logon user name and password.

Protected Storage Explorer
http://www.drinkinginthesun.com/

Look under WininetCacheCredentials for an entry that matches
your current router's configuration page.

Good luck
