Lost Personal Settings and Outlook Express Files

Hello all out there,

My girlfriend was using her computer, turned it off, then came back 5
minutes later, and upon reboot, she lost all her personal settings, as well
as her outlook express files. I was able to recover all her files and
pictures, but I can't get her e-mails. I went looking in the appropriate
directory c:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities, but the Identities file does not exist. I tried copying the
user profile, as well as doing a system restore, but not luck. Someone
please help me get her files back, as she has a lot of school correspondance
in these e-mails. She has definitely learned a lesson about backing up data.
The computer is running Windows XP Home Edition, SP2 installed.

Thanks,

If it is not there, do you know for sure she was using Outlook Express and
not Outlook?
If so, search (start -> Search) for .pst files.
For Outlook Express files, search for.dbx files.
If one of these files turn out and shows a recent modified date,
right-click the file and select Open containing folder to make it easier to
retrieve and move around.

Thanks for the quick reply Mark.

Yes, I am 99% sure that she was using Outlook Express, but I did find a
100+MB file in the Outlook file. I tried importing it into Outlook Express,
and I got all the data back. I guess that 1% was right and she was using
Outlook XP. I had suspected this problem too, but she was insistant that she
was using Express. I took her word for it.

Thanks once again.

Hi Clive,

I'm glad it worked.

Merry Christmas to both of you!
