Lost my quick launch

A

Al

Windows XP Pro, SP1a with latest WindowsUpdate patches.

Have computer set up with non-administrator logins for myself and my wife. I
was logged on as Administrator to do some basic admin stuff. While logged on
as a local admin, I launched Outlook 2003 using the RunAs command with my
non-Administrator account to check my email. After I got done, I logged on
as my normal non-admin account. My Quick Launch was gone. The folders exist
in documents and settings under my profile, but they weren't/aren't showing
up. When I click Properties on the task bar, the "Show Quick Launch"
checkbox is unchecked. I check it and click OK, but when I recheck it, it is
still unchecked. Thinking a registry permission must have changed, I added
my login to the local admin group. Same behavior. Quick Launch is working OK
on my wifes login and the Administrator account.

I've I've looked at permissions on the Quick Launch folders and tried using
TweakUI and the TaskBarRepairToolPlus!, but no luck.

Any suggestions or similar experiences?

Hi Al,

Depends....what are you calling basic admin stuff? When you checked your
mail from there, was it read in plain text? Much more info needed on this
lockdown.

In the meantime:

Quick Launch: Gives error message, Cannot Create Toolbar

Either download the .reg or .vbs from here or run my utility listed below it
to correct.
Note: If you already have my utility downloaded, you will need to
re-download for the added fix.

Taskbar Repair Tool Plus! Quick Launch - Repair
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/taskbarplus!.htm

Quick Launch: Won't remain checked/present nor retains the sort order

Either check your settings here:

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon.

In the right pane under Userinit, Change the key to read:
C:\Windows\System32\Userinit.exe,

Or download and run the reg file on line 263 (right hand side)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Tip:

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

To use the VBS Files: Download .vbs file and save it to your hard drive (you
may want to right click and use Save Target As). Double click the vbs
file. You will be prompted when the script is done.

Thanks for the suggestions.

What were the local admin tasks??? I had previously installed Virtual Server
2005 and was installing a virtual instance of Window 2003 Enterprise Server.
The initial install of a new virtual machine requires you to be logged on as
a local Administrator.

I tried the fixes that both you and Walter suggested. No luck. The WinLogon
key was already set to C:\Windows\System32\Userinit.exe as you suggested. The
permissions on the key appear ok also.

Since Quick Launch works OK for my wife's login and for the built in local
admin login, just not for mine, it would seem to me that it would be an issue
with HKCU or a permissions issue on HKLM. I'm starting to lean towards HKCU.
It appears I lost all my settings for IE (home page, days to track history)
and Outlook (my login to my ISP e-mail account).

Other suggestions?

Hi Al,

From reading this, I would suggest first trying this edit:

Save Settings on Exit (Line 54)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

If that doesn't help, run this combo (especially the last). Good luck!

Run Ad-Aware SE, Spybot and HijackThis:

Note: Update each program, once installed, before running.

Just to put this to bed. I figured this out and fixed it.

Somehow, by a virus or through the OS, some, but not all of my Applications
Data folder was copied from C:\Documents and Settings\<user id>\Application
Data to C:\Application Data when I logged onto my email account. There is a
registry key called AppData that occurs in HKCU that was changed to
C:\Application Data from C:\Documents and Settings\<user id>\Application
Data. Since the copied folder structure was incomplete, the settings wouldn't
stick (no where to write to). When I changed it to point back at the
Documents and Settings version of the Application Data folder and deleted the
shadow copy of the folders, everything worked fine.

Thanks for assist.
