Lost my modem during setup

I started with a clean, fresh install of Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Version 5.1.2600 55274-640-0436465-23648 with all options, Service Pack 2
Build 2600, Microsoft Office XP, communications and other various software,
with all windows internet updates on a Pentium II 550 Mhz 128 MB RAM. The
system worked fine initially except that I had problems with my sound card.
The new card was properly installed with driver and shown to be working
properly in Device Manager although no sound was produced from the speakers.
I checked the obvious i.e. volume controls, wiring, connector, etc. and found
no problem. I removed the card from the system and physically from the
computer the reinstalled without effect.
I decided to remove every device listed Under Sound, Video, And Game
Controllers listed in device manager and pulled the sound card, TV tuner
card, and modem card. Big Mistake! After restarting the system, shutdown,
replacing the just the sound card and driver the same problem existed - no
sound. After replacing all the cards and driver I had no modem either.
Attempting to use the modem resulted in the error message "modem in use" or
similar variation depending on which communication program I used. I then
uninstalled all communication and FAX software except for the last one I knew
was working thinking one of the programs might be interfering but to no
avail. The only clue I have relates to the original problem with the sound
card. Under Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices Properties>Audio the
default devices listed for sound playback and default device are "Modem #2"
and only "Modem #2" with no opportunity to select other devices from the drop
down menu even though the hardware tab lists many other devices. Further,
their is no "Modem #2" listed in device manager so it cannot be uninstalled.
Repeating the removal and replacement of the modem resulted in the appearance
of "Modem #3" under the >Sounds tab. All the devices refered to here and
listed in Device Manager and Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices
Properties>Hardware where shown as working properly with no IRQ conflicts.
Frankly, I'd be happy just to have the modem working again. Checking the
sound card on a different (windows 98) system produced the same result - no
sound. I now believe the sound card to be defective but that dosn't account
for the unresponsive modem I now have.

Are you kidding? Installing WinXP, Office et al on PII with only 128MB of
RAM and you expect the world to be rosy?

A PII with 128MB of RAM???

Windows would crawl by itself...

time to get a new computer. Carter was still in office when you bought the
one you have.

If you are/were happy with the performance you were obtaining from using
this "marginal" computer with Windows XP (I sure wouldn't be) just reinstall
the correct Windows XP modem drivers for your modem.

I am guessing though that the modem is as old as the computer and there may
not, in fact, be any XP modem drivers available to use.

I erronously listed the PC as a PII; It is actually a PIII 550Mhz. It
actually worked fine if a bit slow until I decided to "fix" the sound card
problem. Previous to that I had a fully functioning working modem and system.
Replacing the modem and drivers with another modem and driver resulted in the
same results. All components are Windows HCL compliant and use windows
drivers obtained via windows update. All components are shown to be working
properly in system properties yet when the modem is accessed the system seems
to think a second non existant modem is in use. Any alternative to starting
from scratch and reloading Windows would be appreciated.

Why would you post a reply when you obviously have no idea what the problem
is for a formerly working system???????????????????????????????
