Lost menu bar

Using Excel 2000, regularly and extensively. Suddenly I've lost the menu bar
in all my spreadsheets and any new ones that I create.

Clicking on a toolbar then <Customise> shows the <Worksheet menu bar> to be
checked. (And if I uncheck it, it simply restores the check) The menu bar,
however, does appear if I check <Chart menu bar>, but it instantly
disappears when I close the <Customise> window. And when it is there I can
click on and see the drop-down menus but it doesn't respond to further
keystrokes.

I've run the Office 2000 Professional installation disk to <Repair> but with
no effect.

Can't say exactly what version I've got as I can't access the <Help> menu!!!

Suggestions gratefully received.

First, if you're looking at a chart sheet (not a worksheet), you shouldn't see
the Worksheet Menu Bar.

I'd try this first.
Activate a worksheet.
Then rightclick on an empty spot on any toolbar.
Customize|Toolbars tab|
Select worksheet menu bar and click Reset.

Then check to see if it worked.

If it didn't, I'd do this next:

Hit alt-f11 to get to the VBE (where macros live)
hit ctrl-g to see the immediate window.

Type this and hit enter:
application.commandbars("worksheet menu bar").enabled = true

Back to excel to see if it worked.

If that didn't work, maybe you can just delete the file that excel uses to keep
track of toolbars.

Close excel
Windows search button
search for *.xlb
(in hidden folders, too!)

Rename all you find to *.xlbOLD
(or delete them???)

This will remove any customizations that you've made to any toolbar. You'll
have to rebuild those at your leisure.

If you're happy with the results, delete the *.xlbOLD files.

If you're not happy, close excel and rename those *.xlbOLD files back to *.xlb.

That's the strange thing - it IS a worksheet and not a chartsheet. I had
tried your first suggestion, but will now the second - thanks - but later as
here in the south of England it's a lovely spring afternoon and the garden
comes first!

A thousand thanks - I worked through your suggestions and restored the menu
bar (and my sanity) by deleting the Excel.xlb file.

Enormously appreciated.
