Lost icon

Hi all,

I was trying to move a file across my desktop into My Documents when I
couldn't maneuver the mouse properly and the file came to rest on an
icon - and I don't remember which one! Anyway, the icon disappeared
and I see no way of finding out what it was - it was either a shortcut
or an icon. Is there anyway to recover it? Thank you for any help
and I'm sorry to be so much trouble today.

Immediate fix following the event would have been to press CTRL + Z or
right click desktop and select Undo Move.

If not done immediately, the undo info is lost and that is no longer an
option. Instead search for the file by name to find out where it ended up
at. Try again to move it where you want it stored. When it's finally
situated and if you need a shortcut for it, right click on it and select
"send to> Desktop [as a shortcut]"

Thank you again, Sharon, but I have no idea which one it was. I am so
stupid I could kick myself. Thank you!

If you were moving things on the windows desktop why not right-click
anywhere on the wallpaper and auto-arrange the icons (or arrange them some
other way)? Any merged icons will reappear. If you moved the icon into an
existing folder you do not have many options except to open each folder
whichever way you are familiar with and see what shouldn't be in there (you
should at least recognise the icon you were moving). If it hasn't been too
long since the event consider a system restore as I think this will put your
desktop back to how it was and as long as you haven't added programs since
the last restore point then you will not lose your files etc.
