Lost Floppy Disk Drive

S

sherbrooke

I have lost access to my Floppy Disk Drive.

On checking the details in Device Manager, the floppy drive has yellow
exclamation mark against it. And on going into Properties the following
message is displayed

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may
be corrupted or missing (Code 39)

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 314060 advised a course of action to
overcome this, i.e removing UpperFilters and LowerFilters from the
Registry.

I did this, uninstalled the Floppy Drive in Device Manager and restarted
my Computer. However the fault is still there and my Floppy Drive is
still not accessible.

I would be grateful for any ones help or advice, I am using Windows XP
SP2, Pentium 3, 512mb Ram 40gb Hard Drive.

Have you tried to reinstall the driver?

314060 has nothing to do with floppy drives.

CD-ROM access is missing and messages cite error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19,

Reasons for this error include a driver that is not present; a binary file
that is corrupted; a file I/O problem, or a driver that references an entry
point in another binary file that could not be loaded.

Uninstall the driver, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall
or upgrade the driver.

In addition to what Wes said... Doug's got a handy tool and I have some
directions to make it simple. Error code 39 hasn't ever shown up for a
floppy error in all the systems I've seen? If it has then I want a screen
shot?

This isn't some sort of funky floppy drive that I've never seen nor heard
about is it? Hey, it could happen...

Thanks to everyone who replied.

I have tried everything suggested and the situation is unchanged.

The Floppy Drive is s standard type, been in my computer since new and
never had a problem with it before.

Article 817196 suggested that the probable cause was Smartdisk
Flashdrive Monitor is installed, but this is not the case, it is not on
my machine, I checked the Registry and the ImagePath is correct.

Any further suggestions would be appreciated

It's a floppy giving that error? I must confess I've never seen that. I have
only seen the error with optical drives.

Anyhow, floppy drives are dirt cheap. I'd recommend replacing it or, first,
trying it in another PC and seeing if it works. If not then it's a hardware
problem and needs to be replaced.

Thanks again for your comments.

I do confirm that it is a Standard Floppy Drive and that in Device
Manager the Floppy Disk Drive is displayed with the yellow exclamation
mark. When I click on Properties for the Floppy Drive it displays the
following message:

Floppy Disk Drive
Windows cannot load the device driver for the hardware. The
Driver may be corrupted or missing (Code 39)

As I mentioned in my earlier submission, I have tried all the
suggestions, I have un-installed the hardware and driver and the
re-installed them a number of times without success.

The Floppy Drive Controller is reported to be working fine and the
driver for this is OK.

I tried the floppy drive in another computer and it works fine. I
installed another floppy drive in this machine and it comes up with the
error message.
..
I have re-installed Windows XP SP2, checked all the connections and
nothing has worked up to now.

I do find it most frustrating and am willing to try any further
suggestions.

TIA

Well, being mostly out of options I'd say swap the cable and see if that
does the trick. If it's not the cable it's probably the controller on the
board and that's not a good thing so a USB floppy would be the way to go and
enabling USB legacy support in the BIOS will also be a must at that point.
