Lost broadband connection while downloading huge file

Dear All,

I am semi-skilled technically but to date still cannot find solution to this
problem. My ISP 'SingNet' is only good at taking money and nothing else. My
problem is I got disconnected frequently from the internet while downloading
huge file. What's wrong, event viewer no entry at all? :(

- WinXP home SP2 (512MB RAM) / latest patch
- Dlink 528 LAN card (NIC) / latest driver
- SpeedTouch 585 Wireless + Ethernet (Router)
- 5Mbps broadband

Q) I got disconnected from the internet (uplink suddenly reset to 0 packet)
ALL the time while downloading 1GB demo application, be it from Singapore
(800 kbytes/s), Australia (100kbytes/s), US or EU (40kbytes/s) server. The
only solution is to reboot computer and my connection will come back online,
router do not need to power on/off. Likewise, I cannot visit YouTube site for
long too, after viewing few videos (high download), I will lose my connection
sooner or later.

I appreciate anyone could offer advice, any advice. I have run out of idea
and about to reformat and reinstall XP.

Thanks.

Vincent

Are you sure you sure your router is not set to 'timed'. I had a similar
problem and found out from the modem vendor the router was set to cut out
after 5 minutes; in some countries broadband connections are charged by the
minute, one example is or was Germany therefore the vendor had installed this
to prevent subscribers from incuring large bills.

Thanks Paul, I am using unlimited 5 Mbps plan. If I were to leave my computer
there doing nothing, my broadband connection will stay connected beautifully.
Only when under high DL traffic, the strange discon will happen. Low/moderate
traffic, will work just fine.

I have just concluded that it is really WinXP (wonderful product) that is at
fault. I downloaded the said file (1.2GB) successfully by plugging the
broadband connection to a computer running Win98, all downloaded!!!!!!!!

Me lost words.....

This sounds like a problem with your ISP, not your computer. They
might be deliberately cutting connections with high utilisation.
Check their Acceptable Use Policy.

Here in the UK, it's commonplace for ISPs to sell an 'Unlimited'
package, but then define 'Unlimited' as 'thou shalt not download/
upload big files or lots of little ones too much'. Here, they usually
just terminate your account, or apply some packet shaping technologies
to cut out file sharing networks, but I wouldn't be shocked if there
were ISPs out there which reset connections completely.

If you're downloading files from HTTP/FTP sites, there's a whole load
of 'Download Managers' out there which can resume downloads if the
connections are broken. Check them carefully for spyware though.

Adam.
