Lost Aero Glass?

L

Lang Murphy

Hmmm... not sure what caused this but I lost Aero Glass. The two things that
I did recently were:

1. Enable hyper-threading in BIOS
2. Run winsat a number of times.

Now I don't have Aero Glass and can't even find where the setting is... Doh!

I have not activated the Vista registration yet... still have 13 days
left...

TIA,

Lang

Trying a system restore... if that doesn't work, I'll uninstall MS Beta
Client and File Manager and see if that gets Aero back... If not... crap.
Looks like a reinstall. But I'd really like to identify whatever is was that
whacked Aero.

Yeah... looks like Vista got hosed... when I open Personalization -> Change
your color scheme, where is says "Pick your color" and one usually sees the
different window examples with the different colors, I'm seeing a blank
white box with no examples.

Clicking on OK or Cancel buttons does nothing... have to mash the X button
in upper right hand corner of Window to close the window...

Crap! Wish I knew what caused this... I suspect running winsat dwm hosed
me... though I've got no proof at present.

Your best bet would be to reinstall Vista beta 2. What you could do in the
mean time is, open Control Panel (set to "Classic View") > Problem Reports
and Solutions > View Problem History > Check to see if there are any
specific hardware driver problems there, right click one or two that you
think might be causing the issue, choose View Details, copy the contents and
paste here. Might help us better diagnose the problem.

Nah, Ctrl+Shift+F9's been taken out in 5381 and above Andre (
Try going through:
Or open Control Panel (set to "Classic View") > Personalization > Themes >
click in the Themes list box > select Windows Vista.

as Andre says, switch to Aero Basic/Windows Classic, apply but then change
back to the orginal setting - should work OK. Sometimes you get the Glass
but no transparency - that's when I just tweaked the "Visual Appearance"
settings )

Andre,

Thanks for the response and tips... but... already reinstalled 5384. Think
I'll run winsat a couple of times and see if that hoses it... if not... then
I guess I'll dl the Beta Client and File Transfer Mgr again, see if they
screwed the pooch... if not... who knows? The ol' anomaly thang, I guess...
but I will post the results of my tests... for good or ill...

Thanks,

Lang

Found it! Running winsat with the -csv switch hoses the graphics
subsystem... yee-hah! Going to report it and reinstall and not run winsat
xxx -csv till the next build...

L

Lang Murphy

Nah... think I found a bug that those steps won't fix... the video subsystem
is hosed. Beyond redemption but not a reinstall... ;-)

L

Lang Murphy

And... maybe the bug's really a driver issue... If'n yer in the mood to see
if "my" bug is "your" bug too... try running "winsat dwm -csv whatever.csv"
and let me know how you fare... if you get the same result as I, loss of
Aero Glass and when you try to open CP-Personalize-Pick your colors (or
whatever the Pick your colors is named...) and you get a Pick your colors
box that is blank then we have a repeatable bug across different systems.
Surely this is a reckless endeavor, because you may hafta reinstall... but
that's what we're here for, no?

Here's a twist: in themes, I can select aero, but nothing changes in the
example box. If I click through, the display goes crazy, blinking on and off.
I'm running an ATI X600 that should handle things.

Lang howed you fix this? Mine is currently like this straight from install
though its possible it might be teh same issue.
