A colleague has a windows XP PC that has 2 network connections. The first
network connects via an ethernet card in the PC to an existing network that
uses static IP addresses in the range 192.168.0.x . This is for an existing
software system that he has no control over. He also has a wireless router
for internet access, and connects to this using a belkin USB wireless
adapter. This has also been set up with static IP addresses, in the range
192.168.1.x, and the subnet mask for both is 255.255.255.0 . The ethernet
network works fine all the time, the problem is with the internet access.
About once a week, he finds that the internet connection is not working, and
when looking at the windows setup, the USB adapter is no longer visible in
'network connections'. He has to remove the USB adapter, switch the PC off
and on again, and plug the adapter in again. It then prompts him to install
the software and he has to reinstall the belkin software and set up the
static IP address again. Even more strangely, the ethernet card has also
lost it's static IP address and gone back to the default TCP/IP setting of
'obtain an IP address automatically'. Once it has been re-setup, it works
again for a while, then eventually the same thing happens. I am definately
not a networking expert, although like to think that I know a bit about XP,
but the this has got me baffled. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
