Loop to Startup

My daughter was online playing a game with a friend when out of the blue, the
computer shut down. When she restarted, the "you have a problem" screen came
up with the safe mode, safe mode with networking, last known good
configuration, restart screen. Choosing any selection off this screen
results in the system logging off, restarting and the same screen coming back
on. F8 gives the set up - but nothing there changes anything. I'm afraid that
the recovery disks are the only option, in which case I lose everything.. Any
suggestions?
