Looong boot time in SP2.....

R

Ray

I think I have narrowed it down to a device problem. Upon going into event
viewer I see the error stating the following "\Device\Ide\IdePort1\ , did
not respond within the timeout period." This appears to be causing my long
boot up time of almost 2 minutes. What the heck does this mean. Is there a
setting (bios or registry) I can change that will eliminate this timeout
period and just boot
the damn machine up??

Thanks in advance,

ray

Something is wrong with the device plugged into the Secondary IDE
controller. It could be anything from a poorly written disk/ide driver, a
bios problem, faulty cable, all the way up to an imminent Drive crash.
Before continuing, I strongly suggest backing up your data ASAP.

The error message shows that the drive is taking an unusually long time to
start up (are you hearing any long wheezing/clicking sounds?). You should
run Disk diagnostic software on the drives connected to the 2nd IDE to
ensure the drive is correctly working. If it's a CD drive, eject the CD.

To fix the problem, you can remove the hardware in the 2nd IDE, or disable
the controller in the bios. If WinXP detected a problem with the IDE, it
may switch off DMA for that controller, meaning sloooooooow ide accesses.

Errors Occur" http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=817472
