Looking for recommendation for an installed software inventory tool

A

Al Dykes

I know there are a bunch of corporate tools that collect data and do a
consolidated report. I'm looking for a tool more appropriate for the
care of home computers.

I'd love a tool that listed all the software that could be run as soon
as the machine was first installed to produce a baseline and then run
later to inventory all the added software.

For well known packages, As much info about package versions,
authorization keys, locations of data and profiles, etc would be a
plus.

Suggestions?

I have a couple, Belarc Advisor is a freebie for individual home use. It will
tell you every bit of information on your computer but only currently, there
is no retroactive way to list what you started with. If it's a Dell they had
a section that listed what the computer originally shipped with. It may still
be on their web site, have not been there in a while. Perhaps installation by
date would give you something, but not much as I think about it. Does the
"Help and Restore " section give original configuration? Otherwise maybe a
mix of the install disk, manufacturer archieves, old back up disk or restore
disk etc may get you close. Hope this helps you.
