looking for low cost scanner with decent Vista software

Looking for a basic scanner which will function well with a decent Vista
driver. I don't care if it can't scan slides or isn't great at OCR. I just
want a scanner that will run well consistently and will come with a decent
Vista driver. I don't need super resolution or very fast speed. My most
common use for scanners in the past few years is as a copy machine.

I've read quite a few reviews on the low cost scanners from HP and Epson-
most people seem to think that the hardware is acceptable but that the
software is really bad.

Suggestions welcome- and yes, I'll continue by online search.

thanks,
Joe

You might also consider to get a scanner with the WIA driver model
because then it is supposed to work with every graphics software via
its scan function directly.

You can get HP 5470C's for as little as $10 on E-Bay. These are
actually high-end scanners from 2002 (PC Magazine Editor's choice in
2002). HP says that they don't work with Vista, but I've installed one
(using the last version of HP Precision Scan Pro offered for this
scanner) and everything seems to work just fine ... just not officially
supported, apparently. And Precision Scan Pro is FAR better software
than the current HP junk. If you need an ADF, the 5490C is the exact
same scanner with a document feeder (the feeder can be added separately,
but the separate feeders (C9866A) are hard to find today (if you do find
one, be sure you get the power supply and the input tray).
