Looking for "information organizer" program

hi people.

I have, in other hard drive, ~500 megabytes of
text/spreadsheet/presentation/image/PDF files, from electronic circuit
schematics to lyrics for music. Sometimes, finding stuff on it is a problem.

I am looking for some software to "index" those data, sort of like a
"information organizer" tool. Since I don't know the exact name, I am limited
in what to search.

My scanner come with a program (PaperCOM) that does almost what I want,
creating the concept of "tray" where scanned stuff go. (e.g. one tray for
photos, other tray for text...), but it requires all input to come from the
scanner.

Q: Does someone here knows a program to "organize information"? I think it
would be like a database program, with file name/size/description. But I am
not wanting to build all this from scratch in Access or Excel. It would take a
lot of time.

Don't underestimate the use of folders (aka. directories) in windows
explorer, or any other operating system for that matter.

Here are my root directories (kept on a drive in my computer and on an
unplugged external drive and on various cds/dvds) that perhaps you can
use as an example:

[root d:\]
backup - all installed program or windows settings, copy of windows
directory

filing - stuff I would put in a filing cabinet

multimedia - mp3s, skins, wallpaper, etc

photos - digital pictures I take

reference - collected knowledge

software - drivers, software not requiring installation, and install
executables for software requiring installation.

works - my work, stuff I've created
[/root d:\]
