I am looking for a wide-format PRINTER but do not want to go the plotter
route just yet. Inkjet or laser is fine. The Epson Stylus 1520 (up to
17"x22" format) would fit the bill, but I understand they are discontinued.
Could anybody recommend an alternate? So just who makes the largest format
printer anyway? Thank you in advance for your recommendations.

Epson 1520 is not discontinued. I suggest instead a HP designjet 100 or 120.
Or a Epson 3000 for large print jobs.

I have had the Designjet 120 for a week and I am singularly
unimpressed! quite apart from a tendency to eject paper without
printing, the colour calibration is useless (the calibration sheets
look OK, but the following prints come out VERY dark.) The optional
RIP may well produce better results but I never needed one to get
decent (if smaller) prints from my Epson Photo EX, and I think I've
already wasted enough money. 2 more things, since I'm getting warmed
up: 6 (SIX!) days hanging in normal indoor conditions (no direct
sunlight) is enough to wash half the cyan from a print. that's HP ink
and media! Downloads, forums, support from HP is all fairy stuff in my
experience as no attempt at registration will get my ID, password or
e-mail address recognized. Crap.
