Looking for an mp3 player

S

SysPro

The setup: most of my mp3s are organized by one directory
per album. I've been using WinAmp to play individual
songs, but I'd like an application where I could just
point to a directory and play everything in it, without
having to add titles to a library and build playlists
and all that. Any ideas? I'm running Win98SE, moving
to XP Pro soon.

What version of WA are you using? I have 5.something, and in Explorer I have
a right-click option called "Play in WinAmp". Do you need anything more than
that?

Also, drag and drop a directory into WinAmp has worked for as long as I can
remember.

Try 'One Click Play' version 2.0
I haven't looked for the URL, but this is from the ReadMe:

1 - The installation does NOT modify your registry or any other files.

2 - This program scans, creates and launches a randomized
playlist (OneClickPlay.m3u) of all MP3, WMA and MID files found in
the folder it was installed in AND all subfolders.

Simply place the .exe, .m3u and .txt files in your music folder, and when
you dub-click the desktop icon it launches your default
player, randomizes the songs, and plays them. To change the play folder, cut
and paste the above files in the new folder, and you're good to go again. If
you want to skip around the randomized songs, just dub-click the one you
want to hear in the play list.

Like you, I prefer to play a directory rather than a playlist.

The thread "Free 'Jukebox"..." has produced a recommendation by
"Archangelous" for "1by1". It's a bit quirky, but so far looks
*extremely* good to me.

Home page: http://www.mpesch3.de/

(And it's even a non-installing app....even better.)

Winamp 5.1 (and AFAIK previous versions) have File > Play Folder. Just
select the appropriate folder and it will play the files in alphabetical or
random order as required.

One Click Play is an excellent program. Just place the exe file in as many
folders as you want, and a click on the exe file will open the chosen player
and play the files in the folder. The URL is:

Does "play folder" - you can even point it, say, My Documents and it'll play
everything it finds in all subdirectories!

I like a program with low processor overheads (which definitly does NOT
describe WinAmp!) so I use Audioactive (http://www.audioactive.com). When
you hit the menu button you can choose open and navigate to a folder using a
standard windows "open file" dialogue. Once you are in the folder you want
to play, just hit <Cntrl>+A to select all the files and then the open
button.

While not a no-install program, it does have the advantages of remembering
what directory you were in when last you opened files with the program, and
also includes a playlist creator/editor if you want to use it. What I like
is that you don't have to do so if you don't want to.

Great software, small program. Recommendation seconded. It's full name
is "1by1, the directory player" iirc. It can use WinAmp plugins for
various other formats such as ape, cda, flag, ogg, midi and others.

I use MP3Folders
(http://www.millpoint.com/Products.htm?page=mp3folders) which
according to its info "is a program that lets you treat a directory as
a playlist for MP3 and WAV files. You can navigate the directory
structure of your system and move files by dragging them to and from
folders. You can move files to the parent directory by dragging them
to the 'up' icon in the toolbar. MP3 Folders also displays and allows
the editing of audio headera nad ID3v1 MP3 tags."

At its most simple, I just start the program, navigate to the
directory I want to play and just press the start button and all the
files in the directory will play.
