i've just bought a drawing pen for my computer so i can draw mind maps,
but the mind map progs i have tried take to much time to attatch
pictures to text, so i have decided the only option is to do everything
by hand. The problem with using plain paper and pen is the paper size
restriction.....is there a paint prog which will keep expanding the
canvas size both vertical and horizontal as the size of my drawings
increase?

many thanks for advise.........A

Not sure I follow you, or know what a mind map is, for that matter . .
..
I draw a lot to illustrate mechanical and electronic devices along
with text to explain the workings. I use mostly WordPerfect and Corel
draw, but have played with the freeware vector drawing program in Open
Office and it is excellent.

Paper size? Doesn't the software you are using give you the option of
specifying the paper size for custom sizes?

I do everything on standard paper sizes because that's all my printer
will do. To add more detail just start small and use the tools to
work on a small portion of the drawing at a time.

BTW forgive me if you already know this . . . "Paint" usually refers
to bitmap software - the software works more broadly and specifies
every pixel's characteristics - ala Microsoft "paint"

Vector Graphics programs specify lines (and shapes if it is 3D) by
using a coordinate system of drawing. They would specify drawing a
line, for instance, between two points on the screen described as a
numbers (latitude and longitude or X - Y) and then specify the
characteristics of the line (color, width, shading, transparency,
etc.)

Vector has it all over bitmap in my opinion. There's nothing a paint
program can do that I can't do better with vector graphics. (and do
it faster and with less memory and in more versatile file formats)

to briefly explain.....i need to start sketching in the middle of the
screen and expand the drawing in all directions as i sketch away from
the center...ie....like scroll bars appear when you continue text down
a page......i need those scroll bars to appear both vertical and
horizontal without having to set a canvas size from the beginning.

hope this clarifies....A

many thanks

I tried the help screens on Open Office but found nothing that
indicated it might do what you want.

Ditto WordPerfect Drawing.

You don't have ANY idea of what size you want your resulting project
to be? Why not start with a very large canvas size then shrink it as
necessary? A paint program like Photofiltre (and probably Serif
PhotoPlus) allows you to expand the canvas size you're working on, but
you must do so manually. A vector program like Serif DrawPlus also
allows you to increase the page layout size being worked on.
