look contacts in 2000

we had lost our contacts, which I was able to get back after a sysytem
restore. Then I tried to consolidate 2 different user accounts (in XP) into
one. Then contacts lost again. Have tried restoring to point prior to
changing users accounts, and even back to original restore that had restored
our contacts, but still getting error message when opening outlook that says
cant find pst

System restore did not recover your data. Restore points do nothing to your
data. That's why you back up data.
Restore your data from your most recent backup.
Or provide a comprehensible description of what you actually did here. Yours
makes no sense.
I doubt you actually lost your data. Just search for all Outlook data files
on your hard drive (*.pst) and open each in Outlook until you find it.

Sorry for the poor description. I'll try again.

My wife and I had separate user accounts on XP. For some reason about a
month ago, she opened outlook and it gave the "cant find personal file" error
message. Yesterday I restored the system to the day prior to when she
noticed that, and all contacts were back to normal. Then, for unrelated
reasons, I started to change multiple user accounts on XP to one account.
Prior to this ( and immediately after the successful restore mentioned about,
I backed up the computer onto our external hard drive). I deleted by wife's
user account, being carefull to not delete her files. When I opened outlook
in my (now our) user account, it gave the "cannot find file" error message
and no contacts available. I have searched *.pst on both the desktop and
external harddrive. it found 2 .pst files, one empty and one with one
contact in it.

You restore from a backup or you find your file. Only you can do that, not
us.
If you cannot, then you have learned why most people backup their data. Time
for you to do the same.

I backup right immediately before my problem arose. If it was just a matter
of restoring from the backup, I wouldnt be on the site for help.

Anybody else have any contructive advice?

If so, then you not only have your original file, you also have a backup.
Find and open either one. You must not be searching correctly. PST files are
hidden.
