logs in and logs off automatically

My problem is that i am unable to log on to my computer which has Windows xp Home. it logs me in and then off automatically leaving me on the welcome screen. if i try to log in, it logs me off again. ive tried going to safe mode but again similar problem of logging me off and not letting me see my desktop. I need to go in and backup some of the files before i can format. no restore properties available on recovery cds. can anyone help please? I greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
