Logon user confusion

G

Gary Townshend

I played with some XP settings a while ago, and since then I can't get
Windows to logon as me. It starts up fine, but the settings aren't right
for my ID, and I have to log off and log back on again to get to the correct
settings.

Any ideas? I have disabled auto-logon, but it automatically logons with the
wrong settings anyway.

It shows Administrator, Gary Townshend, and Guest. It doesn't show any
"extra" accounts. And I can't get auto logon to cease and desist. If I
could go back to logging on as me each time, I expect I'd reduce the
problem.

XP is doing an auto logon to the other user, also shown as "Gary Townshend",
even though I've shut that feature off!

See "How to Restore the Operating System to a Previous State in
Windows XP" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306084).

I double checked that, and autologon is NOT selected.

Does the account have a password? If it's the only account on the system
besides the default Administrator account and has no password, XP
automatically loads the desktop. Add a password and it will stop at the
Welcome screen.

Another place to check for autologon settings, Start> Run> control
userpasswords2 Check the box to require user name/password for logon.

Sharon, I can add a password to "Administrator", which I tried without any
luck. But it won't let me add a password to "Gary Townshend".

There is a "Change Password" button in the "control userpasswords2" window.
Does using that route deny adding a password to Gary Townshend account as
well? Also, look in Computer Management> System Tools> Local Users and
Groups> Users. Check the Properties for Gary Townshend. If the box is
checked next to "User cannot change password," remove it.

Sharon, here's a problem. Under System Tools, I don't have a listing for:
Local Users and > Groups> Users

What's next?!

You skipped the part about Computer Management. You have to get to that
first. Then follow the bread crumb trail. Fast way to Computer Management,
right click My Computer and select Manage.

No, I'm there, Sharon. Under System Tools, I see "Event Viewer", "Shared
Folders", "Performance Logs and Alerts", and "Device Manager". Nothing at
all about Users.

Do you have Home or Pro?

Try Start> Run> lusrmgr.msc
