i recently upgraded my computer from windows ME to windows
2000, and it seemed to install just fine, but when i try
to logon, it seems like it is, then says "loading
settings...", then immediatly say "saving settings" and
logs back off. i tried to use the windows disk to do an
automatic recover, but still does it, and i cant reformat
because i have important files on it that i cant backup
because itwont let me on. please help

There is no upgrade path from Windows ME to Windows 2000.
Try to read the hard drive from another computer to get
your important files. Then, you need to do a clean
install of Windows 2000.

Your problem can probably be resolved but the solution
requires a good deal of expertise and patience. As others
have pointed out, WinME cannot be "upgraded" to Win2000,
because WinME was released ***after*** Win2000.
It is therefore not really worth the trouble persisting, since
you're likely to encounter other problems.

There is another worrying point. The iron rule of computing
says that all important files must be backed up every week
to an independent medium. It seems that you do not back
up your files, not even when replacing the operating system.
Food for thought . . . Next time you might lose the lot.

Hello Jesse

I found this ârticle on another forum:
Usually the path to userinit.exe has changed. You can try Microsoft
Knowledge Base article 249321 (http://support.microsoft.com/?id=249321)

It good be your problem. But to resolve you need the ability to access from
outside...

Cheers Marcel
