Logon-Logoff loop

I have the strangest problem,

Using part magic 8, I was increasing the xp drive from 20g to 120g. The
process was cloning the partition from one drive to another. I had
sucessfully done this on 3 machines prior to this. All with windows xp sp2. I
read about the userinit.exe registry entry problem, however when I looked at
it, it was correct. (properly pathed) . But whether I login as local admin
for the machine or domain admin for the domain, it logs on then logs right
back off. wsaupdater.exe isn't on the machine or registry at all.

I put the old drive back in and it boots fine

Very strange.

The problem may be an incorrect system drive rather than Userinit.exe
problem. Open the registry via a networked machine, navigate to
HKLM\SYSTEM\MountedDevices and delete all values that look like this:
\DosDevices\C
