login window doesn't automatically appear

Whenever I boot up Windows XP (either restart, or from a cold boot),
or even if I simply log out, I am taken to the login screen that has
my user account (the only one on the computer). Up until this last
week, I would see a white space below the username; I would simply
type in my password and then I'd log in. Now, however,I see the
username, but no white space, making me click to view it.

I'm wondering what has happened to cause this. It can't be a common
problem; googling simply leads me to myriads of results about not
being able to log in at all. Admittedly this is a minor problem, but
I'd like to fix it so that I don't have to click to be able to type in
my password. Any suggestions?

XP Home or Pro ?
Are you using CLASSIC login box , or 'Welcome Screen' ?
Any recent updating ( maybe automatic) that messed with "security" ?
Sounds like your option changed.

Control Panel - User Accounts
Toggle - " Check/Uncheck " change the way users log off/on
Change it to 'the other way'
exit
do it again and change it back

I have XP Home. I was using the welcome screen; I believe I have
applied some updates within the last week, from MS update site. I went
into the user account options like you suggested. I unchecked the
welcome screen option, which gave me the "classic" logon, which did
have my name and the cursor was already in the field for the password.
After logging in, I checked the option to have the newer welcome
screen, but again the problem appeared.

So I have kept that welcome screen option unchecked, and the problem
has been taken care of. I really don't care if I have to use an older
UI for the logon--at least it saves me a click.

Thanks and Merry Christmas.

You're welcome ( I use that classic window for the same reason)
