I was given a laptop with vista os. When I boot it up it comes up with the
old users name and he does not know what the password is. Is there any way to
bypass that or reset the password.

If the person who gave you the computer cannot provide that
administrator password, and is not someone you know and trust, you might
want to check with your local law enforcement agencies to verify that
the computer isn't stolen property.

Anyway. with second-hand computers, especially if acquired from
strangers but perhaps even if acquired from a family member or friend,
your wisest course of action would definitely be to format the hard
drives and start fresh. You don't want to get in trouble because the
original owner may have filled the hard drive with kiddie porn, or have
problems because the original owner downloaded/installed viruses or
other malware.
