locked up/light blinking

I was using my computer, everything was working fine, then left it on
for a few hours unattended. When I came back into the room, I was in a
rush and hit the power button to turn it off and left it until the next
day.
(I know it was bad to turn it off like that, I don't normally, but I
was half asleep and there were no programs running and it was not
connected to the internet)

The next day, I noticed the power light was blinking very rapidly and
making a "blinking" sound. That's it. It won't start up or anything.
No fans on, nothing. The monitor is black.
I unplugged/replugged it, no change. I then unhooked everything and
put it all back together and still no change. The power button just
blinks on and off and nothing else will happen.

Any suggestions?? I've never seen a computer do this before and am
worried because I have some important pictures on the hard drive I had
yet to put on disks.

Did the computer go straight off or did shut down when you pressed the power
button?
