LOCKED EXCEL WORKBOOK

GARY HARDY

I have a workbook that somehow became "locked". I don't know how or why
and also don't know how to unlock it or even what "locked" means. I
checked the "properties" of the workbook and it doesn't show it as "read
only" but it comes up that way. I can't even delete the file. When I
bring it up I get the message Locked for editing by ". Confused.. Gary

One possible cause.......

Excel stores in Windows\Temp(win98) folder a copy(s) of any file
that is open.

Sometimes this *.tmp file is not deleted from the Temp folder when
you close out Excel(maybe a crash of Excel?) or the file, so Excel
thinks it is still open and locked for editing.

You can try a re-boot and see if that clears it up. If not, after a
re-boot, clear out your Windows\Temp folder.

If using WinXP your Temp folder would be under user.......

Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Temp

If on a network, re-booting the server may be the only solution.

Re-boot first just in case you have any pending install or update being done
which requires any of the Temp files for completion.

After re-start, clear Temp folders.

I run a small *.vbs file which deletes all on re-boot, so keep clean.
