"Lock-up" at Start Up Problem

I am running Windows XP Home Edition
I lent my computer out for a week. I just got it back and when I turn the
computer on, it goes through the very beginning of the boot-up process (no
part of Windows comes up during this) and then a black screen shows up with a
picture of a lock on it. (more of a graphic than a picture, like it's in the
DOS screen)

It allows me to type something (password I assume) and you hit 'enter' and
it puts an "X" up on the screen. I get three "X"s and it won't let me go any
further.

I've never seen such a thing.

Can someone shed some light on this please?

Thank you very much.

Hi,

It could be this....
http://www.worldstart.com/tips/tips.php/1876

or a number of programs like it. The X you are getting is because you don't
have the Key/Password it's looking for and the next two X's is the last
chance you have to enter the correct Key/Password. Better get your friend or
lack of thereof and ask them what they put on your machine.

All the best,
SG
