local area connection - properties greyed out

XP Pro and as Administrator

If I select Network Connections then right click on Local Area Connection,
the Properties is greyed out.

I'm trying to connect to my Hub (192.168.0.1) and the details show "assigned
by DHCP". I have changed many different services trying to make this work.

At one time the details showed "Autoconnect" and gave a strange IP address.

I've deleted ZoneAlarm, the NIC card, etc and rebooted several times.

This condition existed on SP1 and still there on SP2

Help !!!!!!!!!

Hub?

Routers can act as DHCP servers; hubs cannot.

We need more information. What is your setup? Do you have broadband? If so,
do you have cable? DSL?

The common configuration is modem to router, router to computer. If you have
a hub connected to a modem, unless you purchased more than one IP address,
only the first computer connected will get an address, the second one will
get a random IP address of 169.x.x.x (a non-routable address all Windows
systems assign when DHCP fails).

I said hub as I don't use DHCP
I said NIC card and 192,168,0,1 so obviously it's broadband
I can't change anything as I can't get to Properties.

That's my problem.

It's running.

I have applied the winsockxpfix, reset the IP stack, checked the registry,
etc per various on-line instructions.

Details show ip and mask as 0,0,0,0 with DHCP. If I unplug cable I get
proper message.

Task bar icon shows "local area connection", speed 10.0 Mpbs and "Acquiring
network address"

It is connected to my local lan with several other computers connected.
Naturally I want to set this computer to IP 192.168.0.5 (Gateway is
192.168.0.1) but, again, Properties is greyed out.

I looked in the registry (ugh) but could not find any obvious places to
reset this feature.

The other XP on my lan has no problems.

Uninstall and reinstall the video card and the network card using the latest
available drivers.
