"Local Area Connection" icon disappeared

P

pongpong

I removed the network adapter and restalled it after then.
Now there is no "Local Area Connection" icon. Therefore,
this PC can still access the network properly, like get ip
adress, file sharing,...

Does anybody know: is there an .exe file I can run to
modify the network property? or how can get the icon back?

Thanks a loooooot!

PongPong,

You didn't tell us what Operating System you are using. If it is 2000 or above, make sure that
the Network Connections Service is running in services. If this is off, then the connection icons
will not appear.

If that doesn't do it, try a clean boot and see if they are there. If not, then it is some third party
software you installed that removed them. Only thing I can tell you then is to look for recently
installed software around the time you noticed the icon missing. If you look on the Internet for
missing icons and third party software, you should see resources on software that is known to
remove the icons.

Hope this helps.
Gary

Perhaps you should look at Device Manager first and see if the NIC is
installed? Sounds like the driver didn't load. Have you checked the log
file?

You can get to your network setting through Control Panel/Network.

HTH...

I'm going to Ass-U-Me that you're using W2K - I couldn't find
the "show icon" checkbox in 98.
Anyway, log in as Administrator, go to start/settings/network
and dialup connections, right-click whatever your adapter is,
and check "show icon in taskbar when connected."

It's off by default, and naturally, when you took out the old
card, it reset everything.

HTH!
