Loading Vista on Computer with no OS

I am hoping to put vista on my 2nd computer because it has a faster (2.5GHz)
processor than my current one. This older computer crashed when I tried to
get rid of a root kit hijack and I screwed up XP. So the old computer cant
boot. I have the XP key on a sticker on the housing, but no recovery CDs and
I figured why pay HP to send me recovery CDs when I could just load the Vista
Beta on it?
I should be receiving the Vista DVD from MS this week.
Will I just be able to put in the DVD and let it set itself up or will I
need to do more, such as reload XP or do any other preparations to that HD?

All you have to do is delete the partitions that are now there. Then create
and format a new partition, either the whole disk or a part thereof. Then
install. There is no reboot required to do this. Just go with it. The 2-3
reboots come after.

HP has a System Recovery partition on the hard drive to reinstall it back to
day one, as it came from the factory. To acces it, just click on F11
immediately when it boots and you will be given a menu to choose what
recovery you which to make. Click on the F11 key several times as the system
boots. Hope this is helpful.

Guess you didn't really read.

He wants to install Windows Vista on a computer. He doesn't want to restore
anything!

Guess you didn't really, really read. The person would have restored XP but
"I figured why pay HP to send me recovery CDs when I could just load the
Vista
Beta on it?" When his RC1 license runs out, he'll be glad he has a free XP
restore on his hard drive. Thanks to Shirley, he now is aware of it.

Vista's DVD is bootable, so of course it will install on a computer
with no OS.

Vista, like all Windows OSes, will install even on an unformatted HD,
if you use the tools provided in the Installation program.

In addition, if there is no Windows XP installation currently residing
on the HD of your 2nd computer, the upgrade method of installation
will be greyed out, and the only available method will be a clean
install.
