Load On Boot

C

chuck

/q/ I'm running XP Home SP2. Original load was OEM (emachines)

What processes should I expect to find in task manager on a clean boot
- What would show in Task manager if there were nothing on the machine
except windows (OEM stuff not withstanding)

Anticipate using info to help clean up my startup and trying to ferret
out those that I deem unnecessary.

2nd /q/ Is there any way to prevent stuff like real player update
quicktime and the like from insinuating themselves into my startup?

I can eliminate via msconfig or the registry run, but the next time I
run the prog on purpose, there they are again

Thanks

Hi, Chuck.
What processes should I expect to find in task manager on a clean boot
None!

Is there any way to prevent stuff like real player update
quicktime and the like from insinuating themselves into my startup?

Yes, but it's not easy. Real Player, especially, is very aggressive. Since
I'm not very knowledgeable about this, I'll let someone else educate both of
us. All I know is that neither of these programs would be on our computers
if we had not invited them in. And they are configurable to some degree,
but we have to look closely to see how to avoid their intrusive default
settings - or to remove the defaults, once installed. :>(

realplay.exe
[[System Tray icon for RealPlayer. If you subsequently start RealPlayer
manually it adds itself back to the start-up list. You can stop this from
happening by right-clicking on the tray icon and disabling SmartCenter via
Preferences]]

Thanks for the come back.

Just so's I'm clear - you say zero PROCESSES right!? I know I don't
get anything under the APLICATIONS tab. The fact that Processes shows
'system" as the user would lead me to think that there will be some
variety of windows processes running.

Hi, Chuck.

Whoops! No, I meant zero APPLICATIONS. Sorry for the slip of the
tongue...er, finger. :^{

No problem - it's an easy mistake to make

Now that we're on the same applications/processes page - Back to the
original question as to the PROCESSES that will appear on a 'windows
only' load.

I know that explorer.exe will be present - Any ideas - what else?

Thanks
