Thanks, Dave. it was exactly what I was looking for. One of the
troubleshooting tools is "what hidden processes are running" and this
sets a standard of comparison. In W98 it's much easier, I normally
have only about 12 familiar processes running.

Ditto! But note that many services are started by other programs such
as Quicken, Adobe, etc.
