Linux user's company getting roughed up

Imagine what would happen if Apple sold Macs with Linux on them!
The whole anti-Microsoft community would be convulsed in fits of rapture!
I wonder why Apple doesn't do that. It sure would make the world a nicer
place.

But I'm sure once Dell starts actually selling Linux machines, things will
pick up.

S'funny... I'm a loyal Dell customer, won't bore with the reasons here, and
I've been running Ubuntu for the last month or so, including the newly
released 7.04. I've tried RH, SUSE, Solaris (yeah, not Linux, but close
enough...) and Ubuntu is the friendliest Linux flavor I've seen first hand.
Not saying I'd move to it on my first level home PC's, but it is an
interesting development.

That said, I've installed Vista, betas and RTM, on a number of different
Dell PC models and I've never had a BSOD on any of them... not saying I
haven't experienced issues, but all the Dell's on which I've installed Vista
have run it fine. Of course, I did clean installs on all... maybe new Dell's
shipping with Vista pre-installed are as messed up as other OEM PC's with
Vista pre-installed seem to be, if one takes this NG as a valid measuring
stick. If I were buying a new PC with Vista, I'd demand a Vista DVD (not a
stoopid recovery DVD, or I'd take my business elsewhere...) and do a clean
install, wiping off all the crapware OEM PC's ship with these days.

Straight from the Ubuntu forums... a poll on how the new distro's doing...
(Feisty is the nickname [beta name?] of Ubuntu 7.04.)

I upgraded to Feisty and everything is fine. 62 25.83%
I upgraded. Had a few problems (drivers, hardware, etc) but got them fixed.
26 10.83%
I upgraded. Had/Still having a lot of problems 56 23.33%
I did a clean install and everything is fine. 43 17.92%
Did clean install. Had a few problems (drivers, hardware, etc) but got them
fixed. 18 7.50%
Did clean install. Had/Still having a lot of problems. 35 14.58%

First number is users, second number is percentage of all responses.

OK, let's get something straight... If I'm a VistaBoi, I'm an UbuntuBoi too.
Call me MacBoi and SolarisBoi. I don't care. Love messin' with 'puters and
that's that. And, you know what? From looking at these numbers, I'd have to
guess that they're probably not all that far off from Vista percentages.
Guess we'll never know for sure. I mean... the two "still having a lot of
problems" categories amount to, hmm... uh, almost 38% of responses.

The salient metric not captured in this poll is how many of these folks are
experienced Linux users and how many are FNG's. I think a lot of Vista
issues that are posted here are missing the same metric, i.e., if someone
doesn't know how to expose the Run command in the Start menu... is that
really a dink against Vista? I still haven't figured out how to see how much
RAM is installed in Ubuntu. Uh, video RAM? Not a clue..

I downloaded Ubuntu 7.04 yesterday. Installed it in a VM. Downloaded
Thunderbird. Ran the unzipper thang... gee, no program files dir... OK, I'll
create a TB dir in my Home directory and put it there. OK, so now, I've got
no shortcut on my applications menu and if I want to start the app, I can't
create a shortcut on the desktop, I have to open the folder and double click
on the Thunderbird icon. Hmm... Yeah, I like Ubuntu, but anyone that thinks
it will provide a seamless transition for current non-technical Windows
users is, uh, dreaming? (And... again... let me make it absolutely clear
that I LIKE Ubuntu, not dumping on it whatsoever... just.. c'mon, let's be
real when we talk about it being a seamless move from Windows. Dream on...)

OK Solarisboi <g>, I was wondering if you know of or could point me to
some good documentation for those of us (like me) who are new to
Solaris. I have it running on a virtual machine, but couldn't find any
good documentation or training on the Sun website to help me get
started. Thanks! :)

It most likely won't make much difference. They have always offered Linux
on 'select models' and that is all they've indicated they are considering
now - i.e. no change. I suspect that if they actually offered Linux or no
OS at all and repealed the MS tax across the line, it would probably have
a significant positive impact.
