Linksys Router compatibility with Windows CE

B

Bible John

I have a Linksys 2.4 GHZ Wifi Router attached to my Windows XP desktop
PC.

Why in the world is the router so reliable with my Windows 98 Laptop, my
Apple iBook G4 and my Windows CE HPC2000 Jornada 720? This is unreal. I
have almost NEVER used a router on a Wifi connection that was this
reliable.

Back in Shasta Lake we had one with our Cable Connection, and it always
was reseting all the time, so we always had to unplug it. Funny it only
acted that way with my ibook, and never did that was the Windows XP
laptops in the house. After I moved out the other residents were clear
of problems. Maybe the router did not like Mac OSX.

At a library in the city, the Wifi connection barley if at all works
with my Jornada 720, but seems to work fine with others using Windows XP
laptops. I have complained but IS does nothing, as the problem is me,
and I am the only one complaining, so why should they fix it?

This Linksys router works so well with my Jornada 720. Its never slow,
always connects, never resets,etc.. Its just so strange.

Any explanations?

After this experience I have to wonder if the IT people employed at the
library, school, among other places are as competent as they claim. A
good setup with ensure compatibility with Mac OSX and Windows CE.

Browse to the router and check the firmware date - linksys had a
wireless router update sometime back that allowed it to work much better
with windows CE and some other devices. Sounds like the library does
not have the update - not surprising.

I would have guessed at hardware incompatibility between the WLAN adapter in
the Jornada and the various router(s) you had problems connecting to.
Firmware updates do make a difference, but some routers have also had
hardware changes while still keeping the same model numbers.

Re. the library situation, as a workaround you could try connecting at the
libary using a USB WLAN adapter instead of the built in WiFi.

How can I access the IT room when I do not work there?

Erm, not a physical "browse"... As in IE/firefox/pocketIE/etc.

The firmware date/version of the device is what you are after, not a
physical label.

Depending on the version you may or may not be able to see this without
a password.

I figure the best you can do is to suggest to the library that an update
is needed, if indeed this is the issue.

You did not state whether it is a "g" wireless router or "b", but
firmware updates do address what you describe. For the old "b" wireless
router I HAD to update the firmware before a 3835 winCe device could
function properly. A G router is newer, but still there could be
issues. More info on Linksys G updates are here (no doubt the address
will have to be fixed for wraparound):

Ouch. One of the perils of assuming.

If you update OSX 10.x.x, particularly in the range of versions 10.2 to
10.4, you will find up to a dozen or so updates to Apple wireless
network plumbing, a number of which are specifically about getting Apple
stuff to play nicely with wireless Linksys routers. Don't know anything
about the whys and wherefores; I've just noticed the update titles, when
helping friends with their ibooks.
