Links not opening - IE6

Geoff Chalcraft

I've been pulling my hair out over this one for about five days.

There are four particular things which don't work......

1. The 'Reply' link on MSBN Groups Message Boards (where I first encountered
the problem) is a javascript link. When I click on it it may go to the login
page - no problem - then it will try to open the message box. That just
opens a blank, or transparent, window which never fills in. If I've logged
in recently then it just goes straight to the blank window.
In Mozilla, and Opera, the link sort of works, but those browsers just give
me a 'text-only' message box, with no formatting, and I want the full
facilities.

2. When using Outlook Express, we can normally click on a link that is in a
mail text. Right now, I can't do this - it opens another blank/transparent
window, which never loads.

3. In some webpages, some (but not all) normal links which would open a new
browser window (i.e. they use <target="_blank">) will also fail to load. For
example, I can't use the MS Community Newsgroup
(microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.browser) to post, because the
'post' buttons lead to yet another blank page.

4. Pretty annoyingly, Windows Update has some Critical Updates (there are
only three that seem of use to me, as I have always kept up to date in the
past). When I go for a download, the file fails to start downloading after I
'Accept'. Absolutely nothing happens on the download progress bar, and when
I cancel the download it usually closes all IE windows! Again - the links to
troubleshooting do not work, so I can't report this problem.

I found a solution in the MS Knowledge database, and carried out the
recommended moves - using the Register Server program - but it doesn't make
any difference. However, I just noticed a possible fix from Ron Shover
(16:00 22/8/03) in the newsgroup - aboaut replacing OLEAUT32.DLL (ver.3.50)
with its original (ver. 2.40) from the Windows98 CD. Not that it can be done
while using Windows, because the file is in use by Windows! I'm off to
struggle through the intricacies of DOS Extract!

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. In the Open box, type:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

3. Click OK, and then click OK again when you receive the following message:

DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded.

4. If that doesn't fix it, see this article:

http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#new_window

You can also try this:

Go to Start/run, and type SFC (SFC /SCANNOW for Win2K or WinXP).
Choose 'Extract One File From Installation Disk'.
Type oleaut32.dll, not worrying about its location. Then, click Start.

Next to 'Restore From', type in or browse for the file's location, which is
probably in the Win98 folder of your installation CD-ROM (typically
D:\Win98), or in your Windows\Options\Cabs folder, as the case may be.

Then, next to 'Save File In', enter C:\Windows\System, and click OK. System
File Checker looks for the file, saves it as you requested, and then tells
you that 'the file has been successfully extracted'.

You may need to reboot.

I guess you and I have the same problem... I cannot right
click and "open in new window" and all hypertext links
that call for a new window fail. This happened after an MS
automatic Win 2000 update at night (while I was sleeping -
so it wasn't me MS, take note). Oh, and I called, got a
case number, and waited 2.5 hours on a longdistance call
before being disconnected! Great monopoly the Gestapo, no?

Any/all of the above may be related to your "links" problem. Q822925/Aug.
'03 Cumulative Patch for IE would almost certainly help, too (despite the
temporary fix you found today).
