Linking to bigint

I have a user with Access 2002 who needs to link to a SQL 2000 table with a
bigint field. The solution in the interim create a view that casts the bigint
to another datatype friendly to Access. Our DBA tells me this is the only
solution she has found as of six months ago.

Is there an alternative to this? Is Microsoft ever going to fix this in a
more direct way?

I doubt that there is any really good way to handle this. BIGINT is a type that
(as far as I know) has no equivalent in Access. AND if the actual value in
BIGINT is out of range for any number type, then ...
