Linked workbooks

I have a spreadsheet (first file) that contains cell
values that are linked to certain cells in a second Excel
file. This second file has values that are linked
to a third file.

Problem: when I open the first file and click 'yes' when
prompted to link files, the values do not always reflect
the most recent updates to the other workbooks. But I
notice that when I open the second file, the first file
updates correctly.

Is there a way to get all linked values in workbooks 1-3
to update automatically, without having to open the
intermediary (second) file?

Per Frank's other post, my way will not work more than one
level deep with the other workbooks closed. Is there
another way to get this to work (dynamic reference to a
secondary workbook which references tertiary workbook -
without opening all files)? Thx, Marie
