Linked charts

I'm trying to insert a linked chart into PPT but having no luck. I've
followed the directions in ?Help and even look in MS.com but nothing seems to
work. The person who originally made the PPT had linked charts but their
starting to fail. I'm trying to recreate them.

The charts are on an Excel worksheet along with the source data. If I open
the PPT and do a 'insert object, create from file' I get a small portion of
the spreadsheet pasted on the PPT (no chart). I've tried to do the 'insert
chart' routine but I get a weird chart with a small datasheet view underneath
that shows the title of my spreadsheet but exhibits some weird made up data
set.

I figure I'm totally missing some easy way of inserting a link chart but
I'll be darn if I know what it is.

Any help is appreciated.

Go at it from the other direction.

Start Excel, select the chart, copy it, then switch to PPT and do Insert, Paste
Special, Link and you're good to go.
