Link Visual Fox Pro 8.1 to Access 2003

We are trying to create an ODBC connection to a Visual FoxPro database, but
keep getting the error "You must first install the current version of the
Visual FoxPro ODBC Drive. Go to http://msdn.microsoft.com/vfoxpro/downloads.
Select Product Updates, then Visual FoxPro ODBC Driver."

We did that and it still comes up with that error.

So, some background information:
OS: Windows XP Professional SP2
Office 2003 Professional
Visual FoxPro database v8.1

We've also installed the latest versions of MDAC 2.5 (failed saying that XP
already has it installed). MDAC 2.6, 2.7 & 2.8 (also failed saying that it is
for a different version of windows).

We can get access to the data via Excel (The connection created a .odc file
and we can get the data fine) so it's like that driver is only half installed.

The wierd thing is that external to this site (at this site no machine can
get it to connect) there are two other machines which also *don't* have
Visual FoxPro installed connects perfectly.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi Cheval,

Later versions of MDAC don't have the VFP ODBC driver.

Over the years, new features have been added to Fox data tables. The ODBC
driver is only compatible with features used in VFP6 and under, although
tables created with VFP7, 8, or 9 that don't use any of the new features
will still be compatible with ODBC. Since you've connected on other machines
then your tables must not have any of the new data features.

Stabs in the dark - Any chance your ODBC data source was set up as a User
data source rather than a System data source? Do you have administrator
rights to the data?

We tried to create the ODBC data source as System but error always pops up
as well. Yeah, we thought of that, even logged the user out and back in with
the Administrator account, but still no luck. The weird thing is that every
machine outside this one site I've looked has the drivers are installed and
working properly. I jump into MS Access, get external data, select the
Visual FoxPro driver, select the folder with the data files and access
everything fine. It's only at this site where every computer, even the
server has the problem with the error. Someone suggested that the network
administrator had possibly over done some gpedit.msi settings which is
possibly not allowing the driver to fully install (even though it says it
had). He says no, the Administrator account has full everything, locked
nothing. I don't know...

I've gone though the machines here (off the problem site) trying to work out
what application installed the FoxPro drivers as none have FoxPro installed.
Do you know which app does? Even the WinXP laptop with Office 2003 as the
only app has it installed and working perfectly, yet their machines have
WinXP and Office 2003 and nothing.
