Line Breaks - Auto Wrap

In a normal Word document, as I type a paragraph, when the line reaches the
right margin, it automatically wraps to the next line down. We are working
with some Word documents that we want to import into an OS400 application.
This app needs a line break at the end of each line, but Word only inserts
one when Enter is manually pushed.

I'm trying to find a way to have Word automatically put a line break when it
wraps the text to the next line, but can't find anything. Does anyone have an
idea to help us out?

Thanks in advance,

Format the document in a nonproportional font such as Courier New. Set the
page margins so the line length (with automatic wrapping) is the number of
characters you need for the AS400. (Hint: For Courier New, the number of
characters per inch is given by 120 divided by the point size.)

In the File > Save As dialog, set the "Save as type" dropdown to "Plain text
(*.txt)", supply a file name, and click Save. You'll get a File Conversion
dialog. Check the box for "Insert line breaks". You may need to experiment
to find out what to choose for the "End lines with " dropdown so the AS400
understands it, but CR/LF is a good start. When you click OK, the text file
will be saved with a line break at the end of each line as displayed on
screen.

Save the document as a text (.txt) file.

Thanks for the reply:

Is there a way to do this without having to save as a text file? I guess the
problem we run into with saving as a text file is that Word automatically
puts a .txt extension on it, but the OS400 app is expecting the filename with
no extension. If we could convince Word to not append the extension, but
still present the converison to put in line breaks, I think we'd be set.

Thanks again in advance,

In the Save As dialog, enter the file name in double quotes to
suppress the automatic addition of an extension. By experiment, I
found that this works only if you include *some* extension; if there's
no extension within the quotes, Word will add .txt.

Of course, if you don't like the file name that comes out of Word, you
can change it later -- possibly with a batch file that could also
handle the transfer to the AS400.
