"limited or no connectivity" xp - LAN not Internet

Can't find a group for XP LAN networking??

Just upgraded to SP-2 and upgraded Zone Alarm about the same time. I got the
yellow exclamation mark in my system tray on my small LAN (2 computers
connected with crossover) and went to Zone Alarm site for help. I set all 4
entries in my Firewall | Zones to Trusted, and now the network works (at
least from the client to the main computer, which is what I mainly need) but
the yellow exclamation mark remains.

I can't even see the client computer from the main computer, however this
was already the case before I upgraded these 2 programs.

I have researched on the Internet but so far all the answers I have seen
refer to people being unable to connect to the Net, not to people having the
problem with the LAN.

That message means that:

1. The network connection is configured to obtain an IP address
automatically, and:

2. It can't communicate with a DHCP server to get the address
assigned.

What connection is getting the message? Is there a DHCP available for
that connection?

It's normal to see the message in some cases, such as a LAN connection
used in conjunction with a DSL connection that uses PPP over Ethernet
(PPPoE). In that case, the PPPoE connection gets an IP address, but
the LAN connection doesn't.

Employ Google Groups search for articles from me on peer networking.

sorry - I don't really understand your answer, is there a step-by-step
instruction anywhere on the net?
I looked everywhere under my LAN icon settings and couldn't find where to
add DHCP
thanks anyway

did that, Google only came up with some Win95 and 98 articles, about a page
of them
(Google Groups, author: (e-mail address removed) with all words: peer
networking)

Please reply to this message in the news group (not by E-mail) with
more information to help other people understand the problem.

What is the name of the network connection that's getting the yellow
exclamation point? To see, hover the mouse cursor over the
connection.

How are you using that connection? Is it physically plugged into
anything? If so, what?

What type of Internet connection do you have -- dial-up, DSL, cable
modem, etc? If it's DSL, does it use PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE)?

What are the names of all the connections that appear in the Network
Connections folder?

Sorry I must have clicked the wrong button! I thought I had replied to the
group.
The network connection with the exclamation mark is the LAN (Local Area
Connection).
It is being used to connect to my laptop with a crossover cable.
I have an ADSL connection to the Internet which uses PPPoE.
Other than this I have a 1394 connection and an SMC connection. Also a
Network Bridge. The SMC connection is the SMC EZ Connect USB/Ethernet Series
Converter which is what the LAN I think is physically plugged in to. I have
no idea what the 1394 connection is.

As far as I can work out the network cable is physically plugged in to the
SMC but it's the LAN connectoid which runs the network between the two
computers.
Thanks for your help
