"limited or no connection" on local network connection

I run on Win XP SP2 and ADSL broadband. For unknown reasons today my pc could
not connect to the net- the Network Connections warning is "limited or no
connection". I tried disabling and then enabling the local network
connection. The result is the above warning again. I then tried repairing the
network connection. The repair could not be completed. Therefore I am not
sucessful in getting on-line.
I connect the same ADSL to my laptop now and it works- so it is not the
broadband signal.
What could caused this and how can I alleviate this problem? Help is
welcome. Thanks.

Try to re-configure the NIC, for example use speed 100mb instead of auto. this link may help,

Did you install any new software recently, especially any HP scanner
or digital camera programs?

If so then open Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs and make sure that
the "Show Updates" checkbox at the top is selected. Scroll down to
the Windows Updates section and look for the entry for "Security
Update for Windows XP (KB908531)". If the installation date for this
update is prior to 28 April 2006 then try uninstalling it. Reboot the
computer and see if the network problem has been resolved. If so
then go to Windows Update and get the "fixed" version of the KB908531
update.

Good luck

I downloaded the "winsockfix" after reading an earlier thread from here and
it seems to have fix the problem. I am a happy chappy again! Thanks to all.
