Limited Internet Connectivity

Installed Vista and it went well - and fast - but when the computer
restarted, I found it won't connect to the Internet at all. Network card is
enabled and working but when running the network diagnostics, I get the
following message:

Security policy settings on this computer might be blocking the connection

The information goes on to say:

The following policy might need to be adjusted to allow Windows to connect:

Policy Provider: Microsoft Firewall
Filter Name: Microsoft Firewall Authorize Connection Filters

Has anyone run into this and where the hell is this policy/filter?

Thanks!

You might have to contact your IP for help. Then they'll tell you they're
not Vista-ready.

Hopefully someone here can have an answer tho'

I don't think it's them (Verizon), Bill; I have four other computers
networked in - and one of them is running Vista as well and none of the
computers are reporting this issue - just the last one I installed Vista on.

This is mystifying! There are no entries in any of the event logs and when
I run the diagnostic against the Internet connection itself, it comes back as
functioning properly. When I check the connected computers, all five
computers appear in the list as expected.

But the affected computer is stuck in Local Only mode.

Can you see the other computers on your network, if you can then it probably
isn't hardware (NIC) related. It could be a IP address problem or DNS address
problem. I would try checking both, you might try assigning an IP address and
check another computer on the network for a good DNS address and assign that
as well.

IP and DNS are dynamically allocated; I've done ipconfig /flushdns, refreshed
the IP address and I can see the other computers on the network. Resetting
the adapter hasn't done any good, either.

What gets me is that if it is the Windows Firewall policies, I can't find
them - none of them are configured in group policy - and the firewall's not
running; I originally thought there was a conflict between it and OneCare -
but that doesn't seem to be the issue.

Assigning IP/DNS didn't do anything - it's still in Local Only mode. Is
anyone aware of any other testing I can do?

I just upgraded a dell 1705 to vista and have windows live onecare security.
I cannot get ie7 to load a web page with the firewall in Onecare turned on.
However when I turn the firewall off ie7 works normally. I get the same
message as was posted when I let ie7 do a trouble check. (filter name:
microsoft firewall authorize connection filter) is blocking the web page from
loading. I have no idea what is happening and cannot find the filter to make
any changes. I tried reinstalling the ms live onecare program but no help.
