Like Windows 3.1

The Vista is like running a XT with Windows 3.1.
Man is it slow.

I am running it on a 2.8 Pent 4 and 512 Ram.

I get a message each time i run it that the PCCill
and i guess it has to do with the virus program running
along with it. But all it all it's very slow.

Other than that i am having no problems with it.

Unfortunately Vista has been slow off the mark right from the start. The
more multi-tasking you do the slower it gets. I'm running on the same specs
as you are and even the latest build is painfully slow.

As for problems, well my speedtouch ASDL modem has to have a new connection
created every time i reboot/hibernate/sleep. System restore doesn't hold
restore points for more than a day and, when you restore the system, it
takes about an hour to go through the motions of shutting down and then
locks up completely - so system restore is totally useless. Windows meeting
spaces will not run after reboot, my 1GB USB Memory key is not capable of
being used for sppeding the system up (that's great considering it's a
Microsoft USB Memory key).

Those are just a few problems.

if you had read the requirements you would have noted that the minimum
amount of RAM suggested is double what you have.
And even better when you double the minimum suggested

Most all Windows programs only require 512. I don't think Vista
wants 2 gig of ram I'm sure. Most users will not upgrade to that much ram.
The problem is most users of Windows wanted more protection
and now you have it at a coast of speed. Enjoy your new protected
software.

The minimum recommended RAM for any premium edition of Vista is 1GB. Vista
Beta 2 build 5384 is a premium edition.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/capable.mspx

When XP first debuted, the minimum recommendation was 64 MB of RAM, and
nobody would try to argue that this is adequate. Even double that amount,
128MB is barely adequate to run XP. So, is it so hard to imagine that with
Vista, the same is true? That double the amount of the recommended minimum
is just about adequate?

I would honestly recommend at least 1 gig of ram at the minimum. Granted
512mb is the basic usage but if you plan to install other software, I would
upgrade the ram.

Seems odd to me that you don't think most people would upgrade to that
amount of RAM, with 1 gig sticks running around 70 dollars I think most
people would choose to spend $150 dollars on there rig for good performance
when faced with the abysmal performance of a low memory machine.

Understandable but i would say 75% of computer owners
know nothing about RAM and would run there computers with 128 or 512
and never worry about it. Also Companies like Dell and others will sell you
a system with lower ram and most would believe that's all they need because
Dell sold it with there computer.

Not everyone knows everything about computers.

And those that 'do' know are not always prepared to line the hardware
manufacturers pockets simply because they are 'told' by others that they
'must' upgrade. I will upgrade my memeory when it suits me and because i
want to, not because of any up and coming features that Vista may or may not
have. Do i need aero? Well my graphics card doesn't support it. yes it will
get upgraded sooner or later, but the operative word here is 'later'.
Remember the average user as Steve points out is reliant upon companies such
as Dell for advice on what they should or should not have. Most
manufacturers' will supply you with a 'computer' whether it has everything
you want is another matter. It is all supply and demand, and if the hardware
manufacturer can get and extra few dollars (or pounds) out of you at a later
date then all to the good.

Yes but most of us in this forum testing Vista are computer saavy or I dont
think we would be testing it!!! 1 have 1gb of ram and its slow. 10 x faster
on xp.. but I wanted to try it out and give it a fair break. RC1 may help us
if it ever comes out...

Much better with RC1 builds - tested this.
Espacially searchindexer.exe seems to be much better.
Memory usage is a MUCH better. Also the dwm.exe process seems to be leaking
in Beta 2.
But 512 MB of RAM is just not enough. This is already true for XP. Ugrade to
1 GB.
I guess you will need to follow the crowd in that point.
