License Validation problem with XP Pro

Mr Pig

Hello all,

I've recently had to re-format and re-install a computer,
due to hardware changes - however, this isn't the first
time that such a thing has been done (previously it had
been formatted for numerous reasons) and now on boot up it
produces a screen saying that it's having problems
validating the license - which is a new one on me... It
worked fine until I activated it over the internet
yesterday.

The actual message is:

A problem is preventing windows from accurately checking
the license of this computer.

Error code: 0X80040017

Apparently this occurs while trying to log onto someones
profile, it says "activating your settings" and then this
message pops up, clicking okay makes the system reboot.

Any ideas?

When you first activate windows it sends Microsoft data recognising 10 specific pieces of hardware, if you change four or more of these it can cause a problem, in my experience you have to phone them and explain whats happened, they will then offer you a re-activation code

Hope this is helpfu

Greetings --

You might see if either of these KB articles shed any light on the
issue:

Error Code 0x80004005” error message when you install Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;306081&Product=winxp

Error Code 0x80070002 Error Message Cites License-Checking Issue
After Upgrade on Dell Computer
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310794&Product=winxp

It also may be that your activation has become "unregistered."
Try this solution, posted by Carey Frisch, MS-MVP:

Possible Resolution:

Boot into "Safe Mode" by pressing (F8) during a reboot.

Go to Start > Run and type: regsvr32 regwizc.dll , and hit enter.
Then go again to Start > Run and type: regsvr32 licdll.dll , and
hit enter again.

Yep, you've been screwed over by the greed of a convicted predatory
monopolist, that is more concerned about protecting their software from
their customers, than protecting their customers from their bug-riddle
software.

How else may MS f*ck you today?
