Lexmark Z65n on a win98 machine

I bought a Lexmark Z65n printer because it was on sale last fall. Want
to hook it up to a 533 Mhz (AMD) computer running Win 98 via USB
cable. The computer has 256 MB RAM, and a 30 GB HD (with plenty of
free space).

I followed the instructions to hook this up via USB cable. Seemed to
go well. But the printer prints really, really slowly, and the
computer itself now boots up very, very slowly. It gets hung up for
4-5 min at the very beginning of boot-up, just before the point where
you would hit the F10 key to enter into setup. And it takes a long
time (same, about 4-5 min) for it to shut down.

If I disconnect the USB cable (that the printer is on), then the
computer boots up and shuts down normally. Reinstalling several times
has had no apparent effect. I have also downloaded and installed the
latest drivers from Lexmark's site. No effect. Not sure what else to
try.

Any ideas?

My Z65 worked right out of the box on a Pentium III running Win '98, and
it will choke the computer during printing because it ties up the
processor. Since I didn't have any problems I didn't fuss with settings
but my previous Lexmark model Z52 had spooling settings that needed to be
changed to make it print quickly. The Z65 includes a dumbed-down
interface and I'd suggest you contact 1-800-lexmark, since it is still in
warranty. Not that it should make a difference, but are you connected
directly to the computer? Using USB via a hub has given me intermittent
problems with both Lexmarks, and they worked find when plugged into the
computer's ports.

I will follow up on my own question. I decided to try and hook up this
printer to my network (D-link 614+ router that is sharing internet
access among several computers). So I disconnected the USB cable,
hooked up an ethernet cable from the printer to the D-link router, and
then uninstalled and reinstalled the printer driver software on the
computer described in my original question. I had to
uninstall/reinstall the driver software several times before it worked
properly, but it does seem to work fine now. And the computer is back
to its normal boot-up and shut-down times, and the printer is working
fine.
