letter of intent for acceptance to an apprenticeship program

I am looking into a traditional wooden boat building apprenticeship program.
The program administrators require that I send them a "letter of intent" and
a resume in order that they may assess my suitability for acceptance into the
program. I need help composing the type of letter that would serve the
aforementioned purpose.
